I'm fortunate to have been raised in a musical home. My mom was a lover of musicals and whenever she commandeered the stereo console I was treated to "The Sound of Music", "West Side Story", "South Pacific" and the like. Rogers and Hammerstein must be part of my DNA. My dad however, was a lover of jazz and, as a result, I listened to Benny Goodman. Jonah Jones, Stephan Grappelli and terrific dixieland talent such as Phil Napoleon. Those influences, and many others, bent my ear to melody and so my first favorite bands tended to be the likes of The Beatles, The Byrds and the Hollies [the Graham Nash era Hollies]. Then, WOW, I listened to "I Feel Free" on the Fresh Cream album and experienced my blues epiphany. Down the rabbit hole I went and my journey through the musical labyrinth intensified and expanded. Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, Otis Rush, Albert King, Jimmy Herring, Mark Knoffler and so many others now inform my tastes as do bands such as Dawes, The Tragically Hip, Kings X, Larkin Poe and ......on and on it goes. Oh, and did I forget to mention Sonny Rollins, Ahmad Jamal and Wynton Marsalis?
What I love about The Roundhouse Rockers is that they get it because they are all searching the labyrinth. We may never all emerge but we're sure having fun on the journey.
